Tobacco company employee jailed for cigarette promotion

Md Sohel was slapped a fine of Tk 50,000 under the Smoking and Using of Tobacco Products (Control) Act, 2005 on Thursday, Sept 13.A mobile court in Jamalpur has sentenced an employee of Amin and Company to two months in jail and slapped a fine of Tk 50,000 for promoting a campaign that encourages smoking.
The convicted person is Md Sohel, the district branch manager for Amin and Company, also the distributer for several cigarette brands.
Mohammad Imranul Haque, the district magistrate, convicted Sohel under the Smoking and Using of Tobacco Products (Control) Act, 2005 on Thursday, Sept 13, following a raid at the company’s office in Basakpara intersection.
After payment of the fine, Md Sohel was sent to Jamalpur prison.
The mobile court confiscated five cartons of stickers and leaflets that promote smoking and burned them.
