RangamatiUnidentified assailants have killed a man in the hill tract district of Rangamati.
The incident was reported late on Wednesday from Baghaichhari Upazila, said police.
The victim, 30-year-old Misor Chakma was an activist of Parbatiya Chattogram Jana Sanghati Samity (JSS) MN Larma faction.
Local JSS (MN Larma) leaders blamed the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) for the killing. The UPDF has denied.
Baghaichari Upazila JSS (MN Larma) President Suresh Kanti Chakma said, “UPDF leader Uday Bikash Chakma alias Cikkidhon Chakma has led the killing of one of our men Misor Chakma. We came to know that Misor was severely beaten for an hour by the assailants who later shot him to confirm death.
Niron Chakma, one of the organizers of UPDF, has denied said “Internal conflicts (within the JSS) may have led to the killing.”
Locals said they suspect Wednesday’s killing was in retaliation to the Aug 18 killings of seven people, including several UPDF leaders, in Khagrachhari.
Baghaichari police OC Amir Hossain said, “The killing has been reported from a remote area of the district. A joint team of the army and police is on its way to the scene.”
