The technical committee of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has recommended that fund for consumer security should be kept in a separate account and the interest from it should be returned to the subscribers.
The recommendation was made at the power price hiking hearing committee of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) on Monday (Dec 2). At this time, commission chairman, Monowar Islam, commission member Mizanur Rahman and others were present.
While giving power connection, every subscriber has to give a certain amount of money which the distribution companies regard as their income. But as per rule, this deposit has to be returned to the subscriber once s/he severs the line. But in reality, this does not happen.
At the hearing, it was stated that the deposit fund should be transferred to a separate account along with the profit.
It was also stated that the main fund plus the profit need to be kept separately.
