The BNP says its jailed party chief Khaleda Zia’s physical condition is continuously deteriorating citing relatives who met visited her on Friday.
Briefing the media at the party offices on Saturday, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, “The government has jailed her on false charges, moreover depriving her of proper medical treatment. Relatives who met her yesterday confirmed she is seriously ill.”
A former prime minister, Khaleda is serving a five-year term at the old jailhouse in Dhaka since February this year after she was found guilty of embezzling foreign donations made to the Zia Orphanage Trust.
The BNP has long been demanding the government take 73-year-old Khaleda to the United Hospital for treatment.
The government, however, has offered to provide her with treatment at Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital, but the three-time prime minister remains adamant.
