Obaidul Quader briefs the media at the Awami League chief`s Dhanmondi offices on Saturday. The ruling Awami League claims political elements have intruded in the movement for safer roads in an effort to instigate the students against the administration.

“Political elements have intruded in the peaceful protests. Some (political parties) have officially backed it hoping to turn it into an anti-government movement,” General Secretary Obaidul Quader told the media on Saturday.
He said the intelligence agencies were keeping an eye on intruders so that no one can reap a political benefit out of the movement.
Students took to the streets on Jul 29 after a bus accident on Dhaka’s Airport Road left two college students dead while transport owners and workers began an unannounced strike from Thursday after the government said it accepts protesters’ demands before urging them to stop demonstrations which have brought the capital as well as the whole country to its knee.
Briefing the media on Saturday at the Awami League chief’s Dhanmondi offices, Quader, the road transport minister, said that the government has already started implementing the students’ demands.
“The bus’ owner, driver and helper are being prosecuted, which, I believe, was the most important task amid the situation. The prime minister has taken all responsibilities of the victims’ families, who had called the protesters to return home,” he said.
Describing the protesters’ demands as ‘logical and reasonable’, the senior ruling party leader called the students to be aware of any political elements’ efforts to reap benefit out of their movement.
Urging the protesting students to return home once again, Quader said that the prime minister has instructed the law enforcers to be patient.
On the unannounced transport strike, the road transport minister said that the operators suspended services due to safety concerns. “Efforts are on to persuade them to resume services.”
