Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) is running with only four running committees apart from the central committee. Of the 111 district ones, 107 are not functioning.
The four committees formed by recently relieved president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani are active. There are some committees which are running for eight to nine years.
This results in indiscipline because workers are reluctant to listen to leaders of defunct committees.
The chain of command does not exist and middle ranking leaders who aspire to hold top posts are getting old.
Losing hope, many are looking for other work. But acting general secretary of BCL Lekhak Bhaityacharya said: “We are working to make a priority list and committees will be formed.”
Shovon and Rabbani have set UP four committees – Dhaka city north and south, Kushtia University and Chattogram University.
Half of the committees stopped working before Shovon and Rabbani took over the responsibility.
The Dhaka College committee was scrapped one month after being formed in 2016. The committees in Faridpur, Madaripur, Dinajpur, Bagerhat, Khulna, Kishereganj, Gopalganj, Shariatpur, Munshiganj, Gazipur, Rajshahi, Natore, Bogura, Joypurhat, Sylhet, Netrokona, Barishal are seven to eight years old.
In the face of accusations, Shovon-Rabbani were relieved from their post and joint president, Al Nahian Joy, was made acting president and first joint secretary, Lekhak Bhatyacharya, the general secretary.
