“The BNP hasn’t taken any decision on the stay the court imposed on the Chhatra Dal council,” Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media on Friday (Sept 13).
On Thursday (Sept 12) the court ordered a temporary injunction on the sixth JCD national council scheduled to be held on Saturday (Sept 14).
The court also show caused 10 BNP leaders including Fakhrul asking why the injunction shouldn’t be permanent.
Following the order the BNP top brass held a nearly two-hour meeting at the chairman’s Gulshan office on Friday.
“Chhatra Dal is discussing the issue. It’s their matter and they will come to a decision regarding this. BNP is in no way involved with it,” Fakhrul said after the meeting.
“We have been made a party to the case filed for staying the council and we’ll answer in due time and then initiate steps accordingly,” he added.
Responding to queries on what will be the fate of the council, he said, “Chhatra Dal will speak on this.”
Several Chhatra Dal leaders, meanwhile, said that they haven’t received an order from the party leadership and the affiliate’s committee might convene a meeting now given BNP’s change of stance.
On whether JCD’s conflict is tied to the ruling party student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League’s crisis, Fakhrul said, “Of course! A new council was to be determined in a democratic process that has been stayed.”
Blaming the freeze on the government, he said, that the court’s intervention in the activities of a political party is “unprecedented.”
He said that the government was using the court to control politics but anyone who thinks that they can stay in power forever is “living in a fool’s paradise.”
