Several ministers have said if a parole appeal is made then the government will think over the issue. BNP standing committee member, Dr. Khondokar Mosharraf Hossain, said, “It’s clear that no application was made on behalf of BNP to request release of Khaleda Zia under parole.”
Another standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, said, “No parole appeal was made by Khaleda Zia’s family and we cannot identify the motive of the government in bringing the matter to the fore.”
On Sunday (Apr 7), during a hunger strike, BNP leaders have said they do not want parole.
They feel that they can secure release of Khaleda Zia through a movement.
In BNP, only advocate Khondokar Mahbub Hossain is for parole release and he says, “Since the issue of release is political, the government can give parole through an executive order though a consent from Khaleda Zia is essential.”
Khondokar Mahbub Hossain raised the issue of the parole six months ago and said, “There are many cases against Khaleda Zia and it will take time to clear them and secure release on bail; also, the government will deploy strategies to delay the bails.”
We have always maintained that this is a case based on political vendetta and release can only be ensured with the government’s desire.
Since madam is ill, she can come out on parole for medical treatment, he added.
The current PM also came out in parole during 1/11 to take treatment.
The mass hunger-strike began at the Engineers Institute auditorium at 10am on Sunday (Apr 7) and will run till 4pm. BANGLA TRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainParole is an executive order and the court has no role here; the home ministry can issue a parole for a special reason.
Khaleda Zia’s lawyer, barrister Naushad Zamir, says, “We had no discussion about parole; bails in two cases against Khaleda Zia are pending and once these are cleared, she will be able to come out.”
Meanwhile, general secretary of supreme-court lawyers’ association, barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, says: “Begum Zia is ill; the government wants to transfer her to the Keraniganj prison from Dhaka Central Jail and that’s why the BSMMU is being used as a camp.”
Several people at BNP office feel that the imprisonment of Khaleda Zia creates pressure on both the BNP high command and the government.
That’s why the release of Khaleda is dominating all BNP programmes.
Commenting on the issue, information minister, Dr. Hassan Mahmud, said: “I have said before, if a parole application is made then it will be considered.”
