Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia attends a rally in Dhaka January 20, 2014. REUTERS/File PhotoAwami League sources say that on condition Khaleda Zia can be freed under parole if an appeal for it is made on behalf of the party or the medical board.
The source also says that five BNP elected persons in the 11th National Parliamentary Election want to take oath and met the speaker. They may take oath on Apr 20 next.
AL leaders have also said that since Khaleda Zia is undergoing punishment, she cannot be freed politically. A person undergoing prison sentence can only be freed on parole when s/he becomes sick or loses a near relative to death.
AL acting general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said, “Khaleda Zia has no chance of getting release through a political system and none of the parole conditions apply to her; she has to secure freedom through the legal process.”
BNP is regularly demanding that she be admitted to United Hospital and to this I want to say that as per jail code, Khaleda has been give the best possible treatment, added Hanif.
If the BNP leaders apply for parole to ensure better treatment then it may be considered by the home ministry.
On Sunday (Apr 7), BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “We want an unconditional release of Khaleda Zia and never talked about parole; getting bail is her right.”
On Apr 6, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan commented, “If BNP applies for parole then the government will consider it.”
