Ex-Sonagazi OC Moazzem Hossain being brought to a Dhaka court on Monday (Jun 17, 2019). FOCUS BANGLAThe verdict in the Digital Security Act against former Sonagazi Police Station OC Moazzem Hossain over recording slain madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi's statement on a mobile phone has been scheduled for Nov 28.

The Cyber Tribunal (Bangladesh) in Dhaka on Wednesday (Nov 20) fixed the date after hearing closing statements by the prosecution and defence.

On Apr 15, Supreme Court lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Suman filed the case under section 26, 29 and 31 of Digital Security Act against Moazzem for recording Rafi’s statement on video and spreading it online later.

On Jun 16, Moazzem was arrested from the capital’s Shahbagh area.

The trial began on Jul 17, when the tribunal indicted Moazzem who had pleaded not guilty.

According to the allegations, Moazzem summoned Nusrat after she brought sexual harassment charges against Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa principal Siraj Uddoula.

The police officer in his room quizzed her about the charges and recorded the whole incident in the absence of any lawyer or female cop. The video was later found in the social media.

Nusrat was set on fire on Apr 6 by Siraj Uddoula’s loyals. Three days later, on Apr 10, she succumbed to her injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

On Oct 24, the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Feni sentenced all the 16 accused to death for killing Nusrat.
