The International Crimes (ICT) has so far delivered judgement in 40 cases of crimes against humanity since its inception on Mar 25, 2010, and is waiting to pronounce verdict in 41st case on any day.
The ICT-1 on Oct 17 kept the judgement in case against alleged Razakar Abdus Sattar alias Tipu alias Tipu Sultan from Rajshahi, on CAV (curia advisory vault), a Latin legal term meaning the court awaits verdict.
Justice Md Shahinur Islam, chairman of the three-member tribunal, passed the order as both the prosecution and defence counsel completed their closing arguments in the case on that day.
Of the 40 cases, which have been disposed of by the tribunal, verdicts in 29 cases were pronounced by ICT-1, while 11 judgments were delivered by ICT-2, which has been kept non-functioning from Sept 15, 2015.
Of the cases, which have been disposed of by the two tribunals, seven were completed in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, with execution of six convicted war criminals including former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, its secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, assistant
secretary general Abdul Qader Mollah and Muhammad Kamaruzzaman and BNP leader Salauddin Qader Chowdhury.
Another Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee is serving life imprisonment as the apex court has commuted his death sentence, initially awarded by the ICT-1.
On Oct 31, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld death sentence of another Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, while his counsels said they would file a plea to review the judgement once the full text of the verdict is released.
