Abrar murder suspect Jiyon 'confesses'

Meftahul Islam Jiyon, one of the 19 people accused in the case, gave his confessional statement at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari on Friday (Oct 11), court sources said.
Earlier, DB Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman, also the case’s investigation officer, produced Ifti before the magistrate to record his statement.
After recording his statement, Jiyon was sent to jail.
Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Oct 7.
Some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Following the incident, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police.
The BCL also expelled 11 of its members including Jiyon permanently from the organization for their alleged involvement in the murder.
The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.
As of Friday, as many as 17 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
