The move came within a week since a group of ruling Awami League's student body Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists allegedly beat a second-year student, Abrar Fahad, to death for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, on Oct 7.

The killing of Abrar sparked protest among the students with placing a 10-point demand that includes a ban on student politics.

BUET Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Saiful Islam made the announcement at a discussion with protesting students at the university auditorium on Friday (Oct 11). The discussion began around 5:30pm.

"I am banning students politics at BUET as per my power", VC Saiful Islam said.

He declared that from now onwards, no BUET teachers, including himself, would join any political program irrespective of whatever the party is.

Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university, was beaten to death on Oct 7.
Some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Following the incident, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police.
The BCL also expelled 11 of its members including Jiyon permanently from the organization for their alleged involvement in the murder.
The killing of Abrar sparked protest across the country with protesters demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers.
As of Friday, as many as 17 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
