Upazila chairman gets 6 years in prison for perjury & wealth concealment

Jhikorgacha Upazila chairman, Sabira Sultana.Court has handed six years imprisonment with labour to Jessore’s Jhikorgacha Upazila chairman, Sabira Sultana, for perjury and accumulation of wealth beyond known means.
The chairman has also been fined Tk. 5000.
On Thursday, the verdict was delivered by a special court judge Shahidul Islam in Dhaka.
The court has impounded Tk. 1 crore 78 thousand 135 on behalf of the state.
Court official, Habibul Hassan Jibon, said: “under two separate clauses of anti-corruption laws, 2004, 26 (2) and 27 (1), the accused was given six years in total.”
Both the punishments will run concurrently, the verdict stated.
Warrant has been issued against the convicted person since she was absent during the declaration of the verdict, informed the court official.
It’s discovered from the case file that on May 24, 2009, Sabera Sultana submitted a wealth statement showing Tk. 55 lakh 78 thousand 135.
Later, an ACC spearheaded investigation found that her wealth was almost double to what she had mentioned.
On Jul 20, 2010, assistant director of ACC, Syed Ahmed, lodged a case at the Dhanmondi thana and, on Nov 9, 2011, court prepared a charge sheet against the said person.
