Several committees comprising of students from each educational institutions will be formed to bring back order in the roads, said Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul Islam.
“We’ll start forming the committee soon,” he said on Wednesday (Mar 20) while speaking to the students protesting in front of Jamuna Future Park after inaugurating the foundation of a foot over bridge there.
“We will work together to bring back order in the roads,” he added.
“Although the foot over bridge was supposed to be constructed here, it hasn’t been possible due to many obstacles. I promise that it will be completed no matter what happens.”
The mayor pledged that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and city corporation will work together to build these bridges wherever necessary.
“I have the 10 demands from the students and I will take these to the highest level of government,” Atiqul said.
He said that that he has spoken to the DMP commissioner to make sure that no bus without fitness is allowed on the roads and picking up and dropping off passengers without designated bus stops will be stopped.
A Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury-an honours first year student of the International Relations Department at the BUP—was run over by a Suprovat Paribahan bus while crossing the road around 7:15am on Tuesday (Mar 19).
Chowdhury died on spot and his death sparked protests that led to torching of buses in the capital and countrywide road blockades and class boycott.
