CNG autorickshaw. File PhotoDespite raising the fare four times, the CNG-run auto-rickshaws in the city are mired in indiscipline. Reportedly, 62 percent of those are without metres, 98 percent run on agreements in the city, 92 percent ask for tips while 88 percent refuse to go to a destination preferred by the passenger.

The information has come out in a survey done by passenger welfare body which interviewed 310 auto-rickshaw drivers.

The report states that though fare was raised by Tk 60 in one go, the CNG auto-rickshaw sector is in anarchy.

The report shows that drivers’ tip demand range between Tk 20 and Tk 50 but during rainy days or transport strikes, this goes up to Tk 100.

Many passengers allege that after 9pm and before 8am, auto-rickshaws do not follow the metre and drivers agree to take the passenger when a rate has been fixed beforehand.

The common complaint is that the tips in addition to the actual fare is often 50 to 81 percent higher than the fare of any app based ride.

The number of passengers has risen three times in Dhaka in the last 15 years though the number of auto-rickshaws has not increased.

As a result, passengers are forced to accept the demand of the CNG drivers. In addition, passengers are having to indirectly pay for flyover toll, loss made due to time wasted in traffic jams and other expenses.
