Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Khaleda Zia. FOCUS BANGLAHigh Court judges are divided whether incarcerated BNP chief Khaleda will be able to contest the upcoming polls slated for Dec 30.

On Tuesday (Dec 11), Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the decision after hearing petitions challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to scrap Khaleda’s nominations for three seats.

The matter will now shift to the chief justice, who will fix another bench for the hearing as the judges are undecided over the issue.

A three-time prime minister Khaleda filed three nominations to contest the polls from Feni-1, Bogura-6 and Bogura-7 seats.

On Dec 2, returning officers rejected her nominations on grounds that people handed over two years jail term are rendered ineligible to contest polls.
