Khalaf murder: Death sentence remains

Supreme Court of Bangladesh. BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainAppellate division has dismissed the review petition of Saiful Islam Mamun, sentenced to death for the killing of Saudi diplomat, Khalaf al Ali.

As a result, the death sentence remains, said lawyers.

On Sunday (Oct 7), appellate division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, gave this order.

Previously, on Nov 1, 2017, the appellate division upheld the high court verdict in the Saudi embassy official murder.

Detective branch of police submitted a charge sheet on Oct 31, 2012, against Saiful Islam Mamun, Al Amin, Rafiqul Islam Khokon, Akbar Ali Lalu and Selim Chowdhury.

On Dec 30, the swift tribunal handed death sentence to five of the accused.

Following appeal hearings, death sentence was upheld for Mamun, while the punishment for others was commuted to life sentence with absconding Selim Chowdhury exonerated.

Khalaf was shot on Mar 5, 2012, during midnight near road 19/B of Gulshan road 120. He died in hospital the following morning.

On Jun 4, 2012, Saiful Islam Mamun and three others were arrested with a revolver and bullets.

During interrogation, they confessed to killing Khalaf as the Saudi national tried to prevent them from mugging.
