On Dec 26, 2014, 4-year-old Jihad fell into a deep tube-well at Dhaka’s Shahjahanpur.
He fell through the pipe’s opening, which was kept unsealed even after it was abandoned.
The 14-inch wide entry to the pipe, which went down several hundred feet, was covered only with an empty jute sack.
Rescuers had called off their search after 23 hours, but the locals refused to give up.
They finally pulled out Jihad soon afterwards but the child was dead by then.
Rights body Children’s Charity Bangladesh Foundation filed petition with the High Court claiming damages for the death.
On Feb 18 2015, the High Court ruled in favour of the petitioner and ordered Tk 20 million in compensation.
The Appellate Division was moved against the decision, but the verdict remained upheld.
Petitioner’s counsel Md Abdul Halim told Bangla Tribune on Monday that the fund was transferred to the parent’s bank account.
“Jihad’s father Nasir Uddin and mother Khadiza Begum opened a joint account with the Uttara Bank’s Motijheel branch after the court’s order. The fire service deposited a pay-order for Tk 1 million and the railways a cheque for the same amount,” he said.
