Owners decide not to operate buses

Long rout buses are seen kept in Mohakhali Bus Terminal.Owners of public transport have decided not to operate buses in fear of vandalism.
Only a handful of buses are plying on the city road on Thursday when the students have taken to the streets demanding for safe road and punishment of killer bus driver who ran over two students on Airport Road Sunday.
Bus-Truck Owners Association leader Kajol told Bangla Tribune, “The students vandalized hundreds of our vehicles and we called back all our buses to terminal.”
Meanwhile, few buses have left Sayedabad Bus terminal in the morning. Owners and workers said they stop operating in fear of vandalism.
A bus driver of Himachal Transport operator Ramzan Ali said, “We cannot operate as many roads are blocked.”
The students have blocked roads in Uttara, Science Lab, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Shahbag and other areas and no public bus operate from the places.
Road Transport Owners Association leader Samdani Khandakar told Bangla Tribune, “More or less all transport operator suspended their operation. The government has accepted their demand and the accused were arrested. Even then they are vandalizing our vehicle.”
Meanwhile, the students have taken to the street for the fifth day on Thursday demanding implementation of their 9-point demand and punishment of killer driver who ran over two students on Airport Road on Sunday
Like yesterday, they are also checking driving licence and other documents of the vehicles.
They staged a sit-in from Abdullahpur to Airport road while blocked road in Farmgate and Asadgate area creating gridlock in the city.
Students of Pioneer College and Alhaj Mokbul Hossain Degree College blocked Mohammadpur bus stand area and checking vehicle documents there.
Only public sector bus operator BRTC is operating from that area today.
The traffic movement has come to a halt in Shahbagh area as the students blocked the area.
The student agitation erupted Sunday when a Jabal-e-Noor bus was engaged in a race with another bus and ran over several students who were waiting at a bus stand on Airport Road. Two students of Shahid Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College died on the spot while injured others were taken to Kurmitola General Hospital.
To calm down the situation, the government has suspended class in all educational institutions for Thursday.
