BRTA does not even have specific data about vehicles that do not possess fitness papers.
However, BRTA says that till 31 June of the running year, the total number of buses, minibuses and human haulers are 35 lakh 36 thousand 370. In Dhaka, there are 11 lakh 43 thousand 243 transports.
Of this, 22.50 lakh are motorcycles. According to government estimates, though there are more than 50 lakh drivers, only 18 lakh 69 thousand 816 persons have approved licence.
Of them, professional drivers are 8 lakh 30 thousand 90 with 10 lakh 39 thousand 726 unprofessional ones. The rest do not have permits and are the main cause of anarchy on the roads.
Secretary General of Bangladesh passenger welfare association, Mozammel Huq Chowdhury, told Bangla Tribune: “of the 50 lakh vehicles, only 35 lakh have registration. The rest do not have any valid papers.”
Many of the registered vehicles do not have fitness.
Meanwhile, BRTA has a list of 55 thousand cars that have not renewed fitness for more than 10 years.
Of these, 3740 belong to different government and semi-government organisations.
The highest number of government cars without fitness belongs to the police with the number at 1100.
BRTA, director (engineer) Md. Nurul Islam, told Bangla Tribune: “many vehicles do not have fitness but we do not have an accurate information of their number because after taking registration, many vehicles are not on the road.”
Therefore, it’s difficult to pinpoint the accurate number; however, after a court order, we have started the work, he assured.
