Vegetable prices in the kitchen markets have seen a hike amid the transport workers strike over the new road transport law.
The truck and covered van workers’ strike went into effect from Wednesday (Nov 20) causing prices of winter vegetables to go up by Tk 5 to Tk 20.
However, onion prices have dropped slightly with each kilogram selling for Tk 180 but sellers predict it to rise by Thursday if the strike continues.
“Compared to Tuesday, the prices of each kilogram of vegetables are Tk 5 to Tk 20 more. Since the truck and covered-van drivers have gone on strike, many think that the trucks won’t come in on Wednesday (Nov 20) night,” said Md Arif, a grocer at the Kawranbazar kitchen market.
Meanwhile, another seller Jahangir Hossain said that onions from Myanmar were going for Tk 160-170 per kilogram while Egyptian onions were going for Tk 120 per kilogram and potatoes were selling for Tk 100-110 per kilo.
Md Hridoy, a merchant said that wholesale price for onion is Tk 160 per kilograms and its retailing for Tk 180 but sales have gone down significantly.
