Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan speaking at a news briefing at his office in Dhaka on Wednesday (Nov 20).Negligence by Turna-Nishita intercity train's loco master, assistant loco master and guard caused the fatal train crash in Brahmanbaria, says the railways minister.
Speaking at a news briefing on Wednesday (Nov 20), Minister Nurul Islam Sujan said that findings of three of the five probes opened into the Nov 12 crash were available with them.
"The three probe committee came up with more or less the same conclusion; after inspecting the crash site and speaking with witnesses, they have said that the crash as Turna-Nishita's loco master, assistant loco master and guard disregarded the signals," he said.
Minister Sujan said that the inquiries found that Turna-Nishitha's driver had enough time to stop the train, but "he didn't use the brake on time."
At least 16 people were killed and nearly 100 injured as Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita Express from Chattogram rammed Chattogram-bound Udayan Express from Sylhet at Mondobhag Railway Station in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria in the early hours of Nov 12.
After the collision, several coaches of Turna-Nishitha found their way to the top of some Udayan’s carriages while two other coaches were severely twisted.
Five separate probes were opened into the crash -- three by the Bangladesh Railway and one each by the Railways Ministry and the Brahmanbaria district administration.
