While initiatives have been taken to implement most demands of non-government teachers and employees, the movement by the teachers has not ended as yet.

Many teachers and workers of education institutes may carry out campaigns, keeping the upcoming budget in view. As per sources, government has taken initiatives to turn primary and secondary schools and colleges into government run institutes, formulate a salary structure for Abtedayi teachers and include teachers and students within the MPO (Monthly Payment Order) system.

Senior secretary of secondary and higher secondary education division, Md. Sohrab Hossain, told Bangla Tribune, “Initiatives have been taken to include non MPO education institutes within the MPO system.”

After an MPO related application was made in 2018, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “Around 1000 new institutes will be included in MPO.”

Though more than six thousand institutes applied, with the money approved by the ministry of finance, 1000 or 1500 education institutes will be given MPO.

So far, no institute has been included within MPO. At this moment, teachers plus workers are carrying out a campaign in front of the Press Club.

President of the Non-MPO Educational Institutions Teachers and Employees’ Federation, principal Golam Mahmudunnabi told Bangla Tribune, “The movement will continue until demands are met; we talked to the minister and were given promise but haven’t seen any sign of the promises being implemented.”

There are 5200 acknowledged primary and secondary schools in the country, they have to be included within MPO, otherwise, the movement will continue, warned Mahmudunnabi.

Under the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a policy was formulated to bring Ebtedayee institutes within a salary structure but the work on the matter has not seen any progress as yet.

President of independent Ebtedayee madrasa teachers’ council, Kazi Ruhul Amin Chowdhury, said, “Government has made a policy for salary structure but the salary format has not been fixed as yet; if necessary, we shall go for a movement before budget.”

In addition, principals of primary schools demanded salary at the tenth grade and status of a gazette official with assistant teachers wanting salary at the 11th grade.

The High Court gave a verdict to realise the demand of the principals. But the issue is still pending and the principals may hit the streets with their demands.

General secretary of primary education council, SM Abdul Gofur, said, “Pledges were made for the realization of the demands and if that does not happen then teachers will be forced to go for a nationwide movement.”
