Hearing on writ challenging oath on Wednesday

Supreme Court of Bangladesh. BANGLATRIBUNE/Sazzad HossainThe hearing of the writ challenging the legality of the oath taking of the elected lawmakers in 11th National Election without dissolving the previous one, will be held on Wednesday (Jan 16).

A High Court bench led by Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury passed the order on Tuesday (Jan 15).

The writ was lodged by BNP’s Joint Secretary General Mahbub Uddin Khokon.

A notice challenging the legality of the oath-taking was given to the speaker of the parliament, Chief Election Commissioner and the cabinet secretary on Jan 8.

The notice states that as per the constitution’s clause 123 (3), new oath can be taken once the old parliament is dissolved but that was not done which is in contravention to the constitution.

A writ was lodged since no answer came on the notice.
