‘Militants despise democracy’A senior police official has said militants abhor democracy and elections
“So, the possibility of militants attack can’t be ruled out during the upcoming national polls,” said police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit chief Monirul Islam.
“We (Police) are prepared and if any attack happens it will be subdued,” he said on Friday (Nov 16).
Monirul Islam spoke at a citizens' dialogue in the capital’s CIRDAP auditorium.
Citing anti-militancy awareness among people on the rise, Monirul said, “Drive against militants have been conducted at different corners of the country reducing their operational capacity. But they (militants) still nourish the ideology.
On the election, Monirul said, “Law enforcement agencies have been working under Election Commission's authority since the announcement of the polls schedule.
“Police will take no action unless any criminal offence or violation of the electoral code of conducts happens,” he assured.
On Wednesday clash in front of BNP headquarters, Monir categorically said that police showed tolerance unless arson attack took place.
“They (BNP activists), wearing the helmet, attacked police with sticks, torched to two police vehicles.
“There was a huge crowd. But, the perpetrators have been specifically identified using video footages and they were sued only,” Monir said.
