Minority leader for no polls activity in places of worshipHindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council, a platform of minority communities, demanded any election campaigns or related activities be forbidden in the mosques, temples, pagodas or churches.
They have also urged the Election Commission to ensure the safety of religious minority during the elections.
The General Secretary, Rana Dasgupta of the council made the remarks during a media briefing on Friday (Nov 16).
“We did not fight in the Liberation War under Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s leadership, make sacrifices and bear with indiscriminate torture just so we could live as minorities,” Rana said adding that in voting politics it’s the minority who are the regulatory power.
“I can say without a shadow of doubt that it is not possible for any party or coalition to win by neglecting 12 percent of the voters,” he added.
He said that although the political parties are excited about the polls atmosphere, the religious minorities cannot simply drop their reservations because it is them who have to bear the brunt of political turmoil.
“The EC always assures the safety of the minority but never take any actions,” he said.
He also urged the political parties to not nominate a candidate who has history of inciting violence against the minorities.
On behalf of the council, Rana placed a list of demands including the formation of a Ministry of Minority Affairs.
