A suspected robber leader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Hazirhat area of the city early Tuesday, said the OC of Rangpur Police Station Md Mokhtarul Alam.
The victim was identified as Belal Hossain hailed from the city’s Betar Para.
Tipped off that, a gang of robbers was preparing for committing robbery, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 4:30am, said the OC.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate, triggering the gunfight which left Belal dfead on spot, he added.
Belal was named in 18 different cases with police in the city, the police sources said.
