Eleven killed in Rangamati landslides

Rangamati landslidesAt least eleven people including an infant were killed in separate incidents of landslides in two areas of Rangamati's Naniarchar Upazila on Tuesday amid heavy rains in the hill tract district.
The incidents took place in Dhormochoron Para under Barighta union and Boropul Para under Sabekhong union, local sources said.
The acting chairman of Naniarchar Upazila Quality Chakma claimed that a number of people remained missing in Hatimara area.
The OC of Naniarchar Police Station Abdul Latif said, “Heavy rain triggered landslides in different areas. That is why the death toll is still unclear.”
The victims are Surendra Chakma, 55, Rajdebi Chakma, 50, Sonali Chakma, 14, Romel Chakma, 14 hailed from Boropul Para and Fuldebi Chaka, 55, Eti dewan, 19, Smriti Chakma, 23, and the infant Amar Dewan, 1.5 month hailed from Dhormochoron Para, Ripol Chakma, 14, Rita Chakma, 8, hailed from Hatimara and Brishketu Chakma, 60 of Khilachori, said the Naniarchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdullah Al Mamun Talukder.
We will provide Tk 20,000 aid for each family of the victims. Enough relief pieces of stuff are reserved in all Upazilas, said the Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid.
"Police, army and local officials are working to shift the people who are stranded at the risky areas", he added.
In Rangamati, 254 millimetres rain has been recorded in 24 hours since Monday (6am) to Tuesday (6am), district met official Kochimong Marma told our correspondent.
Last year, during the monsoon, Bangladesh’s most devastating series of landslides in a decade killed at least 120 people in Rangamati.
