Ragib Ali (left) and his son Abdul Hai Industrialist Ragib Ali, convicted over land grabbing charges, has been assigned as a gardener in his second spell of serving a 14-year sentence.
He was posted to the role on Saturday as part of his rigorous prison term that court ordered in its verdict on Feb 2 last year, Jail super Abu Sayem said.
Ali’s son Abdul Hai, another convict in the case, is working at the library inside the jail premises.
The father-son duo was convicted on charges of grabbing land of an endowment property of Tarapur Tea Estate through forgery and setting structures flouting rules.
According to the court’s verdict, Ragib would have to serve a maximum of 6 years, as the four separate prison terms for the charges would run simultaneously.
Sayem said, “He has been assigned as a gardener because his conviction stipulates rigorous imprisonment. He waters the gardens inside the jail premises, while his son is appointed in the library.”
Their counsels have filed applications seeking division for Ali and arrangement for better treatment for both father and son.
Jail super said that their applications have been forwarded to relevant authorities.
He also said that, Ali’s lawyers sought for him Division-2 facilities on grounds of their social status.
