Outgoing Dhaka South City Mayor Sayeed Khokon has been made a member of the Awami League's Central Working Committee.
Party chief Sheikh Hasina inducted him into the panel with the powers vested upon her in the party’s national council last month, said a statement by Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan on Sunday (Jan 12).
After he was left out from the mayor race, Khokon had said he accepts the decision, calling the party president and Prime Minister Hasina as his guardian in the absence of his father, the late Dhaka mayor Mohammad Hanif.
Following the bifurcation of the Dhaka City Corporation, Khokon was elected as the Dhaka South mayor in the 2015 polls.
He had sought the ruling party’s ticket for re-election, but the ruling Awami League chose Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
