The High Court has issued a rule asking why the appointment of GM Quader as the Jatiya Party chairman should not be declared illegal.

The bench justices JBM Hassan and Md Khairul Alam gave the order on Tuesday (Dec 24) after hearing a petition filed over the matter.

The Election Commission and GM Quader himself have been ordered to respond to the rule.

Deputy Attorney General Nur-us-Sadiq said that as per JP charter, the chairman is elected through council but that was not the case with GM Quader’s appointment.

He added the petitioner filed the plea after not receiving any reply from the Election Commission.

On May 5, 2019, deceased party chief HM Ershad made GM Quader the acting chairman of the party.

Three days after Ershad’s death, Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga announced Quader as the party chief.
