Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student body of ruling Awami League, relieved 32 leaders of its central executive committee.
A media release on Tuesday (Dec 18) night signed by acting President Al Nahean Khan Joy and General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee said that the decision was made at an emergency meeting of executive body.
The decision was made as allegations raised by some leaders who failed to get desired positions in the central committee were proved against 21 and the rest 11 were willing to be relieved of their positions, said the media release.
The 11 leaders who sought relieve were vice presidents Aminul Islam Bulbul, SM Toufiqul Hasan Sagor, BM Shahriar Hasan, Hafizur Rahman and SM Hasan Atik, health secretary Shahriar Ferdaus, deputy health secretaries Ratul Sikder and Shafiul Sajib, deputy publicity secretary Sizad Arefin Shawon, deputy library secretary Rushi Chowdhury and assistant secretary Anjumanara Anu.

Earlier, the some Chhatra League leaders alleged that the new committee included leaders with criminal records, non-students, drug abusers, drug dealers, married people, and disputed individuals.
Those post-deprived Chhatra League leaders went on hunger strike for three days between Jun 28 and Jul 1 after staging demonstrations at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture for the 33 consecutive days.
On May 15, Chhatra League revealed a list of 16 ‘controversial leaders’, who were awarded different positions in the committee.
On May 28, the Awami League’s student wing announced that they would relieve 19 leaders of their post primarily for controversies.
Following the announcement, on Jun 18, Bangladesh Chhatra League decided to remove 11 controversial figures from their posts. The organisation has, however, yet to disclose the names.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered Chhatra League leaders to drop the controversial leaders from the central committee.
Hasina, also the AL president, approved the Chhatra League central committee on May 13, about eleven months after Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and Golam Rabbani were made president and general secretary, respectively, in the 29th council session of the organisation.
Following the announcement of its 301-member full-fledged committee, at least two factional clashes took place, leaving at least 15 injured.
Following a decision of an AL Central Working Committee meeting at Ganabhaban on Sept 14, Rezwanul and Golam Rabbani were removed and vice-president Al Nahean Khan Joy and joint general secretary Lekhak Bhattacharya were made acting president and general secretary of Chhatra League respectively.
