The next general election will be very tough says, Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina calling grassroots leaders to resolve their internal feuds and gear up for the polls.
“Do keep in mind that the upcoming election will be a very tough one,” she said on Saturday while addressing a party meeting at the Ganabhaban.
Saturday’s special extended meeting was the third of its kind in recent weeks, where representatives from party units from Union councils in Rangpur, Khulna, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions attended.
Instructing grassroots leader to highlight the government’s development efforts in their constituencies as well as boost the organisation, she said, “Everyone will have to work together for the party-nominated candidates ... Your job is to strengthen the party and make the people understand it that the Awami League works for them.””
The Awami League is committed to building a nation free of poverty and hunger. “Highlight these commitments to the people and tell them that voting for Awami League will lead to a better life.”
She instructed the union unit leaders and activists to help reach different social security allowances, including old age and widow allowances to people, properly focusing on different development works, during her government.
Being an Awami League activist does not mean making a fortune, Hasina said before adding: “That’s what the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami does; corruption, embezzlement even amassing donations for orphanages.”
Criticising her arch-rival BNP chief Khaleda Zia, Hasina said she fakes illness.
She, however, said that the former prime minister does suffer from some illness, but blamed Khaleda for using it as an excuse to skip court hearings.
Federal Bureau of Investigation or FBI agents from the US will testify against her in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case, Hasina said adding that Khaleda is faking illness to avoid court hearings.
Saturday’s meeting started with the welcome speech by Awami League General Secretary and Cabinet member Obaidul Quader followed by obituary reference by Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan.
Members of the Presidium and Central Working Committee and Advisory Council also attended the meeting.
