Authoritarian rule must go: Kamal

REUTERSBangladesh needs to be freed from the grasp of the authoritarian rule, says Gano Forum chief Dr Kamal Hossain, who leads the opposition alliance Jatiya Oikya Front with the BNP.

"The constitution has guaranteed people's rights as owners of the country. We must organise and guard our rights by uniting against autocratic rule," he said while addressing a meeting of his party’s central committee on Tuesday (May 7).

"We must register protest if anything is done beyond the constitution. We must make the government accountable. Or else, we will lose our ownership of the country," he said.

The Gano Forum chief said people must remain aware of the way the country is being run.

Depicting the country's overall situation, Kamal urged the party leaders to organise people throughout the country against autocracy.

He said people will have to force the government to run the country as per the constitution with their united efforts.

The newly elected General Secretary Reza Kibria and other top leaders of Ganoforam were present in the discussion.
