BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam AlamgirThe BNP MPs-elects are under pressure from the government to take the oath of Parliament, said the party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
His remarks came while responding to media queries on Friday (Apr 26), a day after BNP lawmaker Jahidur Rahaman went against the party decision and took oath on Thursday.
“Of course there is pressure! The kind of government that does not have the people’s mandate do these things to remain in power,” he alleged.
BNP maintains that the ruling Awami League’s landslide victory in the Dec 30 was a result of blatant vote rigging.
Fakhrul said that BNP was a party of the people and the decision of a group or individual will not damage the party in any way.
Saying that the rest of the party was steadfast on not going to Parliament, he added, “There is no argument there. Action will be taken against those who go against the party decision.”
Terming Jahidur Rahman’s decision to take oath as “outrageous” Fakhrul said that the party will take action against him.
On BNP leaders interested in going to Parliament, he said, that they don’t know anything about the decisions of other elected leaders.
Responding to queries about the government trying to tear BNP apart, Fakhrul said, “This isn’t really unheard of in Bangladeshi politics.”
He added that there have been many attempts to break BNP but they always got back on their feet.
