Ruling MPs Abdur Rahman Badi from Cox’s Bazar and Amanur Rahman Rana from Tangail are not getting the party’s ticket to run in the upcoming election, says Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
“Despite our internal survey showing them ahead of other aspirants, they will not get the party’s ticket to avoid controversy. Badi’s wife and Rana’s father will be nominated as the party’s candidates,” he told the media on Tuesday (Nov 20) after a meeting with Indian envoy Harsh Vardhan Shringla at his offices in the Secretariat.
Cox’s Bazar-4 MP Badi was named in the government’s intelligence report in 2014-15 for drug trafficking in Cox's Bazar-Teknaf area. But he always denied his involvement in drug trade.
In 2016, a Dhaka court convicted him of concealing his wealth and for discrepancies about his possessions to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
He was given three years in jail and slapped a fine of Tk 1 million. He challenged the verdict in High Court and now is out on bail.
Rana, the Awami League MP from Tangail-3, is now in jail after being indicted in the 2013 murder of a local Awami League leader.
On Jan 18, 2013, Awami League leader Faruk Ahmed's bullet-riddled body was found in front of his home in the town's College Para neighbourhood.
Police pressed charges against Rana and 14 others, including the lawmaker's three brothers.
