BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is still a Bangladeshi citizen, the party says describing statements made by Awami League leaders as ‘propaganda’.
“Tarqiue Rahman has not denounced his citizenship in any way. He is very much a Bangladeshi citizen,” Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Wednesday.
Addressing a demonstration in front of the Naya Paltan party offices, he claimed that ‘the government has fallen into its own trap’.
“The British law does not say that submitting an individual’s passport amounts to denouncing citizenship. It’s the standard procedure for seeking asylum,” said the senior BNP leader.
