State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam has been served with a legal notice over his remarks on BNP leader Tarique Rahman surrendering his nationality.
Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s media wing, told Bangla Tribune that the legal notice was sent on Monday by Barrister Kaiser Kamal, on behalf of Tarique.
Kamal said that the legal notice claims the state minister’s statement as ‘false, fabricated and motivated.’
“Shahriar Alam has ten days to produce evidence backing his claim that Tarique Rahman has surrendered his nationality or has to issue a public apology. Otherwise, legal actions will be initiated,” he told Bangla Tribune.
Editor of two national dailies— Naeem Nizam of the Bangladesh Pratidin and Imdadul Haque Milon of the Kaler Kantho—have been served with similar notices for reporting the state minister’s claims, added Kamal.
Speaking at a reception for Prime Minister Hasina in London, State Minister Alam questioned Tarique leading the party after his mother’s conviction for graft,
"How does he play the role of BNP's acting chairman? He rejected Bangladesh nationality by surrendering his green passport," he told the Apr 22 event organized by the Awami League’s UK chapter.
