Jamaat Shibir is chalking out subversive plans ahead of the national elections, says intelligence sources. Several units of the law enforcers have already begun special operations, arresting several Jamaat activists from different cities including Dhaka. A large amount of explosives is believed to have been recovered.
AIG of police headquarters, Md. Sohel Rana, says: “based on intelligence, drives are being carried out in different areas.”
We are trying to apprehend those who are planning to foil the elections, he said.
Police headquarters and intelligence agencies say that prior to and after the 5 January, 2014 elections, Jamaat was the most active in anti- government movements.
They carried out anarchy and devastation all over the country, added the sources.
Since registration was cancelled, Jamaat will not be able to go to polls under the party symbol.
This is the reason why they may be even more active in trying to thwart the election, intelligence sources say.
Intelligence officers believe that Jamaat-Shibir leaders and workers maintain communication, using different computer applications.
One official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police says: “we recovered 150 kg of explosives from six Shibir leaders in Wari on 26 September.”
Several police officials feel that Jamaat may target some landmark establishments.
DMP sources also say that of the 800 sedition cases, 500 feature Jamaat workers as criminals.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Mahbubur Rahman, said: “we fear that Jamaat may try to carry out subversion during elections and, therefore, police drives are ongoing.”
Jamaat’s statement sent to several media outlets say that in October, more than 500 workers and activists were arrested.
