In an interview with tv station ‘Channel 24’, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that they have no plans to boycott the polls.
The BNP sat out of parliament after around two and a half decades by boycotting the Jan 5 2014 elections held with Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina as prime minister.
In the interview, aired on Wednesday, Alamgir spoke on the current political scenario, upcoming polls as well as on the process of forging a ‘national unity’.
“We have been calling a national unity for long. This regime wants to install a one-party state. The people want this government out of the office. Our Chairperson Khaleda Zia had called for a nation unity before she was jailed. Our initiative of a national unity is a part of it,” said the senior BNP leader.
On the latest update of forging a national unity, he said that they were ‘somewhat successful already’.
Responding to a query, Mirza Fakhrul said that the BNP is a pro-Liberation political party before claiming that it was the ruling Awami League who were crushing the spirit of Liberation. “They are destroying the democratic process.”
On the BNP’s long-time trusted ally Jamaat-e-Islami, he said that a “final decision” was yet to be taken. “We have to consider several strategies.”
