FILE PHOTOThe ruling Awami League is considering to share something between 65 and 75 seats for its allies in the upcoming national election, says General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
“We have started preparations for the election, which will go into a full swing this month. Talks have been opened with allies as well as those interested to join us,” he told the media on Saturday after a meeting of the party’s Secretaries Council.
According to him, the Awami League is considering to not float candidates in 65 to 75 constituencies allowing its allies to contest.
“But it’s not binding. We will accept only in case of a winnable candidate,” said Quader.
Saturday’s meeting of the Secretaries Council discussed on the latest political situation and the organisational issues, he said.
“We have also discussed about the district units and mulled a plan of train-based party campaign in the northern region,” said the Awami League secretary general.
He urged BNP to follow democratic path to get people’s mandate in the next general election. “The party (BNP) must shun undemocratic demands to help flourish democracy in the country”.
BNP chief Khaleda Zia has no other way to get release from jail without facing the court procedures, Quader said adding she has been imprisoned by the court in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
About BNP’s opposition to using EVM (electronic voting machine) in the general election, he said they (BNP) would not be able to bring any allegation of vote-rigging under EVM technology.
