Commenting on Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder’s EVM meeting boycott, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said that BNP proposed his name during the formation of Election Commission (EC).
However, he thinks that all the commissioners are efficient and neutral.
Earlier on Wednesday, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder boycotted an EC meeting convened to discuss amendment of Representation of the People Order (RPO) to pave the way for using Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
He also submitted a note of dissent on a proposal to amend the RPO.
Responding to a query, Ahmed told journalists, “EC convenes meetings on different issues. There can be difference in opinions. The decisions that they will take through discussions are final. The government will accept it.”
He also said, “EC was formed through the search committee. BNP also proposed their pick during its formation and it was Mahbub Talukder. That's not a big deal, though. I think the election commissioners are all efficient and neutral.”
On the topic of using EVM Ahmed said, “This is EC’s decision, not the government’s. Name one country where no controversies arose after the election. It’s all but natural.”
“BNP has been opposing this Election Commission since the day it was formed. They are always against anything good, they criticise,” he added.
