Former North South University teacher Hasnat Karim, who was detained for the last 25 months in connection with Holey Artisan terror attack case, has been released from prison.
On Thursday afternoon at 4:30pm, he was released from Kashimpur high-security prison where his family members and relatives were present.
Confirming his release, Kashimpur Jailer Bikash Raihan said, “After scrutinising his release documents sent by the court, we discharged him.”
After the horrific terrorist attack at Hotel Artisan café in Gulshan, a posh area in the capital, on Jul 1, 2016, he was detained by the law enforcing agency after one day and later shown arrested in the case.
Karim’s wife Sharmina Karim, told Bangla Tribune, “We are happy. At last, he has been discharged from the jail. We believed that as he is innocent he would be released one day.”
We went through a miserable time during the last two years, said Sharmina who along with their two children were also present at the café where the terrorists killed 20 persons including 17 foreigners.
On July 23 this year, the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, the investigation entity, submitted to the court the case charge sheet from which the name of Hasnat Karim was dropped.
Anti-terrorism special tribunal judge Mojibur Rahman on Wednesday passed an order relieving him from the case.
