The bus driver, Masum Billah, who ploughed into the students killing two did not have the correct permit to drive a large vehicle.
He had been driving a bus with the licence for a private vehicle. The man admitted to RAB that while driving, he was in competition with another bus to take passengers; at one point, he lost control of the vehicle and hit students by the road.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the bus company, Zakir Hossain and directors may be implicated for appointing the driver for heavy vehicles though he had permits to drive only light ones.
Commander of RAB-1, Lt. Col. Sarwar bin Kashem told the media that after the accident, they used sophisticated technology to track down the drivers who were engaged in the road race and the accident.
Masum Billah was arrested from Borguna. Billah used to work as an assistant to the driver and obtained a licence for light vehicles three-four years ago.
RAB sources also say that the drivers of other vehicles who were involved in the race also hold permits to drive light vehicles.
An official of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority says: “if one is involved in an accident with the wrong permit then the law will take it that he did not have any licence at all.”
In the bus accident, a case of death due to reckless driving was lodged at the Cantonment thana.
The four drivers plus assistants are in prison with remand hearing set for 6 August.
On Sunday last, several buses of Jebel e Noor transport were engaged in a race to pick up passengers and, at one point, driver Masum Billah lost control and hit students standing by the road.
Two students of Shaheed Ramizuddin Cantonment College, Dia Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajiv were killed. Mim’s father has lodged a case at the Cantonment thana.
