Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Md Alamgir at a media briefing on Tuesday (Jan 7).There's no reason for students to demand a reschedule of the Dhaka city polls and demonstrate for it, says a senior Election Commission (EC) official adding rescheduling the polls was not an option.
The protests will not affect the elections to the two Dhaka city corporations, EC Secretary Md Alamgir said on Wednesday (Jan 15) before adding, "They need to realise that the Sarswati Puja is on the 29th and the polls on the 30th while the SSC exams begin on Feb 1. There's no option for rescheduling."
His remarks come amid protests by Dhaka University students, which started from Tuesday (Jan 14) after the High Court turned down a petition seeking the polls to be deferred citing the Hindu festival.
Earlier on Wednesday, police a march of Dhaka University students to the Commission's offices.
They were stopped in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh, where they demonstrated until 3pm.
Speaking to the media after a meeting of the Commission, Secretary Alamgir said that the students were "being unreasonable".
"I believe, they will soon realise that the protest is not reasonable," he said.
