Public works dept engineer quizzed by ACC over graft

File photo of Mainul IslamAdditional chief engineer of the Public Works Department, Dr Mainul Islam, has accumulated a vast amount of wealth through abuse of post, graft and corruption.
It’s believed that he made the money from three projects of the department: tender for the construction of RAB headquarters, construction of the independence pillar at Suhrawardy Udyan and purchase of furniture for the residential buildings of the Rooppur atomic power plant.
The information about the malfeasance has come out in an ACC probe. The report states that engineer Mainul Islam amassed huge wealth through controversial contractor, GK Shamim. The engineer was quizzed at the ACC office on Sunday (Jan 5).
ACC deputy directors Jahangir Alam and assistant director Gazi Noamul Ahsan questioned him but Mainul refused to reveal any information.
Accusations against Mainul include: 1. Delay of nine months in joining his post; 2. Absent from work from Jan 1, 2005 till Sept 20, 2014. For remaining absent for more than 9 months he was relieved from his post but got back the job through the ministry. 3. He played a role in awarding the construction of the RAB building to GK Shamim’s firm GK Builders; 4. Taking of 7.13 percent extra form the contractor for the construction of the Tk 2.65 billion independence pillar; 5. Corruption in the purchase of pillows and other equipments for the Rooppur residential area of the atomic power plant etc.
On behalf of the contractors of the department of works, complaints of corruption, graft were submitted against Mainul.
On Sept 20 last, GK Shamim was arrested from Niketan in the capital and during questioning gave a list of people which contains the name of engineer Mainul.
ACC has questioned 11 officials for abetting GK Shamim in laundering money, misusing power and unlawful accumulation of wealth.
