Awami League’s Dhaka South city mayoral candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has assets worth Tk 1.15 billion while BNP’s Ishraq Hossain has assets worth Tk 50 million.
Moreover, Taposh’s yearly income stands at Tk 100 million while Ishraq’s yearly income is less than a million, according to the affidavits they submitted to the Election Commission along with their nomination for the Jan 30 Dhaka City polls.
The last day to file nomination was Tuesday (Dec 31). According to the rules, the aspirants filed an affidavit of their assets and income along with the form.
According to the affidavit, Taposh, a barrister by profession has a yearly income of nearly Tk 100 million from various sources including rents, shares, savings certificates and law practice. His wife’s yearly income is over Tk 21 million.
Although there are no lawsuits against Taposh, he does have debts including Tk 46.7 million in advance rent.
Ishraq Hossain, businessman by profession earns nearly Tk 910 million every year. He is the director of four companies and owner of one. His income is accounted for by his salaries and profits from shares.
Meanwhile, his assets are worth nearly Tk 50 million and he has over Tk 6.5 million in debts.
Jatiya Party candidate Mohammad Saifuddin, a businessman, has a yearly income of over Tk 13.5 million.
His income is accounted for by his his businesses and rents. His assets include nearly Tk 6 million cash, insurance worth nearly Tk 7 million and a car worth Tk 1.7 million.
Saifuddin owes nearly Tk 28 million in debt while his wife has debt worth Tk 20 million.
Islami Andolan’s candidate Abdur Rahman has a yearly income of Tk 823,000. A businessman by profession, his assets include over Tk 5.8 million cash, a four storied building, car and land.
Gano Front’s Abdus Samad Sujan is the executive editor of a newspaper and a politician. His yearly income includes 3 bighas of land worth Tk 30,000.
National People’s Party mayor aspirant Baharane Sultan Bahar is being tried in two cases including a murder case.
The businessman has yearly income of Tk 150,000 and his assets include Tk 50,000 cash and another Tk 50,000 in the bank.
Bangladesh Congress Party candidate Md Akhtaruzzaman alias Ayatullah didn’t show any yearly income. He has Tk 250,000 in cash, $150 and Tk 350,000 in the bank.
Dhaka South City Corporation Returning Officer Abdul Baten said that if any of the candidates concealed any information in the affidavit, their candidacy will be scrapped.
