No outdoor New Year celebrations: DMP chief

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam addresses a press conference in the DMP Media and Public Relation Division conference room on Monday, December 30, 2019Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has banned all kinds of New Year’s Eve celebrations in public places such as roads, flyovers, and rooftops to maintain law and order.



Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam read out the directives at a media call in the DMP Media and Public Relations Division conference room around 11:30 am on Monday.
People have been requested to refrain from celebrating the New Year's Eve with fireworks.
From 6 pm onwards Tuesday, no outsiders or vehicles will be allowed to enter the Dhaka University campus. Resident teachers, students, and staff are requested to enter the university area at the Nilkhet and Shahbagh crossing after showing valid identity cards.
Residents of Gulshan, Banani, and Baridhara are requested to use Kamal Ataturk Avenue (Kakoli) and the Amtoli crossing (Mohakhali) to enter these areas as other roads will remain closed.
Police also said no one will be allowed to stay in the Hatirjheel area after 8 pm.
All bars in Dhaka metropolis will remain closed from 6 pm on New Year's Eve until January 1.
City dwellers have been asked not to carry any licensed firearms in various residential hotels, restaurants, public gatherings and festivals of Dhaka city from 6 pm on Tuesday to 6 am on Wednesday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police will take legal action against those who fail to comply with these directives.
