Tributes pour in for Prof Ajoy Roy

People from all walks of life have thronged the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka to pay tributes to noted Dhaka University Professor Ajoy Roy.
The body of Prof Roy was kept at the Shaheed Minar from 11:20am to 12:35pm on Tuesday (Dec 10) when people and different organizations paid respect by placing wreaths, reports UNB.
From Shaheed Minar, his body will be taken to Birdem Hospital as he donated his body to the hospital before death, said his younger son Anujit Roy.
Prof Ajoy Roy, father of slain blogger-writer Avijit Roy, died at Birdem Hospital in the capital on Monday (Dec 9) at the age of 85.
He was admitted to the hospital with fever and breathing problem on Nov 25 and breathed his last at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital at 12:35pm.
A freedom fighter, Ajoy Roy also participated in the Language Movement of 1952, the mass uprising of 1969, and the non cooperation movement of 1970.
In 2012, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak, the highest civilian award of Bangladesh.
Roy was the founder and president of the Shikkha Andolan Mancha, a platform for education movement, and chairman of Shamriti Mancha, a platform for peace-harmony-tranquility.
He was also the editor-in-chief of Muktanwesa magazine, a Bengali publication for promoting freethinking and secular humanism, and member of the advisory board of the Mukto-Mona, an internet forum of freethinkers.
